Winter in our orchard of old delights

A quote from The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery: It was winter in our orchard of old delights then,—so truly winter that it was hard to believe summer had ever dwelt in it, or that spring would ever return to it.

An Interview with Virginia Kantra, Author of Anne of a Different Island

Anne of a Different Island by Virginia Kantra

Anne of a Different Island is a book by Virginia Kantra that will be published later this month on January 20, 2026. It is the story of Anne Gallagher who returns home to Mackinac Island after her father’s sudden death. The life Anne built for herself in Chicago has been unraveling both professionally and personally, and she needs time to figure out what she really wants in life.

The book is inspired by the Anne of Green Gables novels by L.M. Montgomery. Readers of Montgomery’s series will recognize echoes of her characters in Kantra’s contemporary novel. Like Anne Shirley, Anne Gallagher experiences her own coming-of-age challenges as she returns to her hometown for the summer. As Anne grieves the loss of her father, she forms new relationships while rebuilding old ones. She tries to make decisions about her career and find her place in the world.

I was fortunate to be able to read an advance copy of the novel courtesy of Penguin Random House and to have the opportunity to ask Virginia Kantra a few questions about her novel.

Here is my interview with Virginia Kantra:

1) What about Anne of Green Gables inspired you to write this modern story about a woman who is similar to Anne Shirley?

Growing up, Anne of Green Gables was one of my go-to, feel-good reads. Not because it introduced me to my first, best book boyfriend, Gilbert Blythe. (Okay, partly because of Gilbert.) But mostly because I saw myself in Anne. She gave me hope—in the words of my Anne—that “a strange girl with a big imagination and a bigger mouth could find her place in the world.” That yearning to belong is something most of us carry into adulthood.

I was also inspired by the way Lucy Maud Montgomery dealt with real-life issues in her books. I set Anne of a Different Island on Mackinac Island, Michigan, because I felt nostalgic setting evoked the charm of Prince Edward Island, and I wanted to use the reassurance of familiar tropes (enemies-to-lovers, first love, small-town romance) as a way to talk about love, anxiety, grief and resilience, about finding your way forward despite the bends in the road.

2) I have run a website on Anne of Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery’s other works for many years, with an emphasis on Montgomery’s lasting legacy. How do you think your novel adds to this legacy?

I wrote Anne of a Different Island for the girls who grew up loving Anne and the readers who need her now. My heroine, Anne Gallagher, is herself an Anne fan in her mid-twenties, what I think of as a contemporary “coming of age,” when you’re figuring out who you are apart from your parents and what you’re going to do with the rest of your life. Revisiting a beloved classic is always a risk, because the emotional stakes are so high. But I hope I captured some of Anne Shirley’s irrepressible spirit—and that the book points readers back to Montgomery’s series, where that magic began.

3) Anne Gallagher is an English teacher with an ability to connect with young people through books. I enjoyed how you incorporated The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Red Sky at Morning, and of course, Anne of Green Gables into your novel. Could you reflect on the relationship between reading and personal growth and the importance of having access to a wide array of books?

I love that you picked up on that! It’s so important to read about characters who are like us, especially when we feel we don’t fit in. When Anne is defending her classroom library in Anne of a Different Island, she says:

“Sometimes books are the only safe place kids have to explore who they are and how they feel. To understand they’re not alone. How would I have navigated my own life without Meg Murray and Anne Shirley, Jo March and Jane Eyre, to offer a road map and point the way?”

Stories help us feel seen. And just as importantly, they help us to recognize others. Reading about characters from different backgrounds, walking in their shoes, seeing through their eyes, expands our understanding and creates empathy. We are all kindred spirits. Books remind us of that.

4) Hailey describes Gilbert Blythe as Anne Gallagher’s “perfect book boyfriend.” Could you talk about how you view Gilbert as a foil and romantic lead?

I’ll put it this way: Years after I first read Little Women, I still wavered between Team Laurie or Team Baehr. But Gilbert Blythe won my heart the minute I met him. He and Anne don’t start off on the right foot. He calls her “Carrots.” She breaks her slate over his head. They have an intense schoolroom rivalry. But Gilbert meets Anne as an intellectual equal, and the way their friendship deepens into love feels natural and right. He respects her. He believes in her. He even gives up his teaching post so she can stay close to Marilla.

Anne Gallagher wants to find her own Gilbert. But one of the things I explore in Anne of a Different Island is the tension between fiction and real life. Anne has a destination in mind, but no clear map. Joe, on the surface, is no Gilbert Blythe—he’s older, rougher, and much less articulate. But the same qualities that make Gilbert the perfect romantic hero make Joe a great partner: his sense of responsibility to his family, his devotion to Anne, and his determination to support her dreams.

5) What aspects of Anne Shirley’s character speak to you, and why do you think she’s so beloved worldwide?

Anne Shirley is an icon for dreamers everywhere. Like most creatives, she’s observant, sensitive, and expressive (sometimes too sensitive and expressive , Marilla might say!). Basically, she’s your average teenager. But she’s also uniquely and perfectly true to herself.

One of my favorite lines from the original Anne of Green Gables is:

“My life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes.' That's a sentence I read in a book once, and I say it over to comfort myself whenever I'm disappointed in anything."

It’s over-the-top and achingly sincere all at once. But in addition to capturing Anne’s dramatic side, this quote demonstrates how she faces disappointment with humor and resilience. We all need the comfort of books and the escape of imagination. Anne has this amazing ability to find joy in the world. No wonder we love her!

6) What books have helped shape you as a writer?

I started with Andrew Lang’s fairytale collections and then moved on to the children’s classics: The Narnia Chronicles, The Phantom Tollbooth, A Wrinkle in Time. I’ve reimagined Little Women (Meg and Jo, Beth and Amy) and The Wizard of Oz (The Fairytale Life of Dorothy Gale). And, of course, Anne of Green Gables.

Those books sank deep roots. They helped form not only what I have to say, but how I say it—the cadence of fairytale.

They taught me that magic is possible, relationships matter, and ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things. Those beliefs are at the heart of my writing and very much at the heart of Anne of a Different Island.

L.M. Montgomery and Change - The L.M. Montgomery Institute’s 17th Biennial International Conference (2026)

Three photographs of L.M. Montgomery at different ages, image advertising the L.M. Montgomery and Change Conference held by The L.M. Montgomery Institute

On June 24–28, 2026, the L.M. Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold their 17th biennial international conference, entitled "L.M. Montgomery and Change." The academic conference will be held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It will be a hybrid conference, and all sessions will be live-streamed so people may either attend the event in person or participate virtually.

There will be three conference keynote speakers:

Megan Follows - the actress beloved for playing Anne Shirley in Sullivan Entertainment's Anne of Green Gables (1985) and its sequels. Follows is currently working on producing a television series based on L.M. Montgomery's life, titled Lucy. Maud. Her keynote is titled: "Anne of Everywhere: How A Redheaded Girl from PEI Became Canada's Greatest Cultural Ambassador and Changed my Life Forever."

Katharine Slater - associate professor of English at Rowan University will present a keynote titled, "Change the Subject: Queer Opacity and L.M. Montgomery."

Allison McBain Hudson - the current Visiting Scholar at the L.M. Montgomery Institute will present a keynote titled, "Maud, Pat, and Me: The Materiality of Change"

Attendees may present their own papers or propose panels. Here are the details from the LMMI's call for papers:

Call for Papers

“It seemed to open such dizzying possibilities of change.”
— L.M. Montgomery, Emily Climbs

“All she really wanted, or seemed to want, was to…see that as few changes as possible came into existence there.”
— L.M. Montgomery, Mistress Pat

“Is it really the same world I saw then that I see now? It seems so very different.”
— L.M. Montgomery, Selected Journals vol. I

“The only constant in life is change.”
—Heraclitus

The constancy of change pervades Montgomery’s life, work, and legacy. From the social, literary, political, and technological changes that took place throughout her lifetime to the ways in which she wrote about her characters coping with personal change, Montgomery engages change in all aspects of the human experience. Whether considered a positive or negative force, change is vital in both “real” life and in fiction, for without it comes stagnation, boredom, or worse. Change is not an easy force to be reckoned with, and the challenges of change are a common theme in Montgomery’s world.

The 2026 conference invites proposals for research presentations that consider the theme of change in L.M. Montgomery’s works and world. Submissions should engage some aspect of this force in Montgomery’s life, creative work, life-writing, or legacy. Possible topics include, but are not limited, to:

  • Changes in society during Montgomery’s lifetime
  • Changes to physical environments affected by Montgomery’s legacy
  • Paradigm shifts in Montgomery’s fiction or life writing: changes in dreams, life trajectories, expectations, hopes, assumptions, etc
  • Changes to Montgomery’s work due to self-editing, whether to her fiction or her journals
  • Montgomery’s own dislike of change as presented in her journals and/or characters
  • How Montgomery’s fictional characters deal with or feel about change
  • Changes in Montgomery’s style, tone, subject matter, and voice over her career, whether in her fiction, life writing, or poetry
  • Changes to the critical responses to Montgomery’s work over time—how have scholars studied or perceived Montgomery’s work?
  • Changes to the ways readers (and viewers) find, accept, reject, engage with, and generally consume Montgomery texts.
  • Changes made to Montgomery’s work in translation or adaptation, particularly considering the role of equality/diversity/inclusion
  • Ways in which Montgomery’s works speak to current changes in aspects of our own lives, from personal circumstances to global events such as war, pandemic, the development of AI
  • The agency involved in changing one’s environment or circumstances in Montgomery’s fiction or life writing
  • Changes in the natural world – seasons, destructive forces, or the effects of time as presented in Montgomery’s fiction, life writing, or legacy
  • Climate change through the lens of Montgomery’s work and legacy
  • Affective change: what emotions/ somatic experiences/ interconnections does Montgomery render in her writing? Does change hurt or heal?

Proposals should articulate a strong argument and situate that argument in the context of existing Montgomery scholarship. Individual paper and panel proposals are double-blind reviewed. We also welcome proposals for workshops, special exhibits, or other visual displays engaging these ideas. Proposals that view Montgomery’s life and art from different cultural and theoretical perspectives are particularly encouraged. For more information, please contact Caroline Jones (caroline.jones@upei.ca) or Allison Hudson (allison.hudson@dcu.ie), co-chairs of the 2026 conference. “L.M. Montgomery and Change” is to be a hybrid conference. It will be held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 24-28 June 2026; all sessions will be livestreamed, allowing for virtual presentation, attendance, and participation.

Welcome, New Year

A quote on welcoming the new year by L.M. Montgomery in Anne's House of Dreams.

"'Welcome, New Year,' said Captain Jim, bowing low as the last stroke died away. 'I wish you all the best year of your lives, mates. I reckon that whatever the New Year brings us will be the best the Great Captain has for us—and somehow or other we’ll all make port in a good harbor.'

The Diary of Gilbert Blythe - Volume I: 12 to 19 Years Old

The Diary of Gilbert Blythe - Volume I: 12 to 19 Years Old by L. David, translated to English by Anna França

The Diary of Gilbert Blythe - Volume I: 12 to 19 Years Old is a book by Brazilian author L. David that is based on L.M. Montgomery's Anne novels. But rather than following Anne Shirley's perspective, L. David's story imagines Gilbert Blythe's childhood and adolescence. The Diary of Gilbert Blythe currently includes three volumes that follow Gilbert's life from age 12 to 25. Originally written in Portuguese, the first volume has been translated to English by Anna França and was published in September 2024 by Babelcube Inc.

The second volume of the story, based on Anne of Avonlea, is currently being translated to English by Sarah Ferreira. The third volume, based on Anne of the Island, is available for translation on Babelcube.

Here is the description of the book:

The Diary of Gilbert Blythe imagines what the childhood and adolescence of the male protagonist from Anne of Green Gables could have been like. Closely following L.M. Montgomery's original plot, the Diary is a faithful retelling of the famous story — but now through Gilbert's point of view, delving into his family, friends, inspirations, dreams, and insecurities, and, of course, the development and growth of Gilbert's feelings for the lovable little redhead, Anne.

Anne of Green Gables (2023)

Anne of Green Gables, a play by Ashley Griffin

Anne of Green Gables (2023) is a play written by Broadway writer and performer Ashley Griffin. It is based on the novel Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

In telling Anne's story, the play emphasizes the importance of community and communal telling. Designed as a strong ensemble show, the entire company is onstage during the whole performance as in "Our Town." The cast listens to and reacts to scenes. Even performers without lines play a role in the physical storytelling.

Anne of Green Gables by Ashley Griffin was published in 2023 by Plays For New Audiences: A Division of Children's Theatre Company. It runs an estimated 60 minutes, and can be cut for competition. The cast includes 27 characters, and it is possible to double and triple roles. The play is available for productions worldwide through Plays For New Audiences.

The play is described as follows:

Meet Anne Shirley, a red-haired orphan with an imagination a million miles wide! Anne unexpectedly arrives in the small town community of Avonlea and soon captures the hearts and minds of her newfound family and neighbors. Anne's story, told through the lens of an ensemble cast, reminds us that we are all shaped by the people we surround ourselves with and that finding one's place in the world is a journey best traveled with the support and love of others.

Looking for Anne of Green Gables

Looking for Anne of Green Gables: L.M. Montgomery and Her Timeless Heroine by Irene Gammel

Looking for Anne of Green Gables: L.M. Montgomery and Her Timeless Heroine is a book by Irene Gammel that was published in July 2025 by Sutherland House Publishing. The book explores L.M. Montgomery's sources of inspiration when she created Anne Shirley. It also examines Montgomery's secrecy during her life and her way of curating information to create her public persona.

The 324-page book is a newly expanded edition of Gammel's research, which was originally published in 2008 for the Anne of Green Gables centenery under the following titles: Looking for Anne: How Lucy Maud Montgomery Dreamed Up a Literary Classic and Looking for Anne of Green Gables: The Story of L.M. Montgomery and Her Literary Classic. The new paperback edition includes additional chapters and research.

In a 2008 interview, Irene Gammel described her work, saying: "Looking for Anne is a dual biography because I wanted to show that Maud projected aspects of herself into the novel—her own ambition, her determination, her loneliness, and her hunger for love and family life. I also wanted to show that the novel was a wish fulfilment dream. She dreamed up the things she did not have in her own life. Ultimately, we also see a woman who was successful as a writer because she combined the role of romantic dreamer with that of pragmatic business woman, launching herself from small-town Cavendish onto the world stage."

In a 2025 interview with The Eyeopener, Irene Gammel noted that the first edition of her book was more like a research assemblage, and "This time around I had the feeling I was telling a story."

Here is the description of the book from Sutherland House:

For over a century, Anne Shirley has captivated readers with her fiery red hair, boundless imagination, and plucky spirit.

First introduced as the protagonist of Anne of Green Gables in 1908, she quickly became one of fiction’s most iconic characters, with the novel selling over 50 million copies and translated into more than forty languages. Yet little is known about Anne’s origins. Her creator, Lucy Maud Montgomery, a farm girl from Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, was an intensely private person.

In Looking for Anne of Green Gables, Irene Gammel draws on her archival discoveries, and on the author’s private journals to reveal an emotional landscape of longing, loss, and a deep yearning for connection—themes that found their way into her famous novel. Blending biography and cultural history, Gammel traces the parallel journeys of Montgomery and her beloved heroine, showing how the author’s personal grief was transformed into the triumphs and joys of Anne Shirley. This dual biography of Montgomery and her timeless character explains how a literary classic was conceived and why it continues to enchant readers today.

Happy 40th Anniversary to the Anne of Green Gables Miniseries

Photograph of Megan Follows as Anne Shirley in Sullivan Entertainment's Anne of Green Gables miniseries

Forty years ago today, Anne of Green Gables first aired on CBC Television. The miniseries was adapted for the screen by Kevin Sullivan from the novel by L.M. Montgomery. The first part of the two-part, made-for-television miniseries aired on December 1, 1985, and the second part aired the next day on December 2, 1985. Starring Megan Follows as the unforgettable Anne Shirley, the television film was directed and produced by Kevin Sullivan.

The miniseries was highly rated on Canadian television, and it was later distributed internationally to acclaim around the world. The film re-introduced L.M. Montgomery's stories and Anne Shirley to a new generation.

As a child, who watched the miniseries when it first aired, the film had a profound impact on my life. I watched it again and again with my family each year. When I moved to another country, the miniseries was an essential and important part of my Canadian identity. The story shaped my worldview and my belief in friendship and kindred spirits, and it reinforced my love of nature.

I'm grateful to have grown up with Kevin Sullivan's enduring production and to have had the story play a lasting role in my life.

Unboxing Anne of Green Gables x Ullala Pajamas

Anne of Green Gables x Ullala Pajamas Unboxing

Last month, I wrote a post about the new Anne of Green Gables x Ullala Pajamas collaboration for Fall/Winter 2025. The clothing line is inspired by Nippon Animation's Anne of Green Gables.

I was tempted to order "Anne's Rain Shower" pajamas. They arrived a few weeks back. I took a few photos while unboxing them because the packaging was so cute. The pajamas themselves are well-made and adorably feminine.

I especially love the dreamy Anne Shirley on the back of the neck.

I imagine I'll only have sweet dreams in these pajamas.

My Maud by Katie Maurice

My Maud by Katie Maurice by Rosalee Peppard Lockyer

My Maud by Katie Maurice is a book by Rosalee Peppard Lockyer about L.M. Montgomery's life as told by Katie Maurice, her imaginary friend. The 82-page, softcover book is written in verse and is illustrated with Montgomery's own photographs and portraits, which were selected, edited, and colorized by Lockyer. The book commemorates the 80th anniversary of L.M. Montgomery's death and is annotated with information about the author. The book celebrates creativity and friendship.

Here is the description of the book from the author:

This storybook is a celebration of friendship and imagination. Have you ever had an imaginary friend? Well, I have, and so did Lucy Maud Montgomery (Maud), author of the world famous Anne of Green Gables. As a child, Maud actually had two imaginary friends, but one was her "kindred spirit." Maud's imaginary friend (as well as Anne's) was Katie Maurice.

This is the story of L.M. Montgomery's Life of Imagination, told from the perspective of its personification, Katie Maurice-Maud's imaginary friend. I wrote it as a poem, in verse. It is illustrated with my selection of 45 of approximately 2000 photos L.M. Montgomery personally took, as well as 22 professional and candid portraits of her, supplemented with field photos and event "snaps" which I've arranged to visually tell her story, and to recall over a dozen of the colourful scrapbooks Maud also created. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of her passing, I am so proud to share this example of my women's history work with you. I invite you to read her story out loud while you look through the camera lens with her. You'll see the people, places and magic Maud saw and loved throughout her lifetime of creativity. And maybe you'll step through Katie's glass door into her fairy room, too.

May your own creative imagination be inspired by this magical, historically accurate storybook-it has so much "scope for imagination!" I hope you'll share it with kindred spirits of all ages. Please let me know; I'd love to hear from you.

Earlier this year, I had an Anne of Green Gables sighting at a library. There was a fun city direction sign pointing the way to beloved fictional locales including Neverland, 221B Baker Street, Camelot, Tatoonie, the Emerald City, Avonlea, and more.

It made me smile to see a sign pointing the way to Avonlea.

Super Team Canada's Anne of Green Gables Episode

Screencapture from Super Team Canada showing news about the Anne of Green Gables centre being attacked on PEI

Anne of Green Gables had a starring role in an episode of Super Team Canada that aired last spring. I had a chance to watch it last week, and thought I'd share my thoughts on my Anne of Green Gables sighting.

Super Team Canada is an animated comedy series about a group of six underdog Canadian superheroes who are trying to save the world after the rest of the Earth's superheroes are eliminated. Each member of the group has a curiously Canadian superpower, and the show is filled with Canadianisms and stereotypes. The series stars Cobie Smulders as Niagara Falls (the mighty maiden of moisture), Will Arnett as Breakaway (a hockey player who has a slapshot full of justice), Brian Drummond as Sasquatchewan (a brute that flattens evil), Ceara Morgana as Chinook (a teenager who can harness ice, snow, and sometimes even sleet), Charles Demers as Poutine (who commands the power of cheese, fries, and gravy), and Veena Sood as RCM-PC (a PC that is also PC). A press release described the show as a "tongue-in-cheek love letter to the Great White North."

The series premiered in May 2025 on Crave in Canada. You can also watch the show on Tubi. The cartoon was created by Robert Cohen and Joel H. Cohen, and it was produced by Thunderbird Entertainment's Atomic Cartoons.

The first season includes 10 episodes. The episodes are roughly 22 minutes long, and each episode is split into two 11-minute-long stories.

Episode 3 of Season 1 is titled "Who Wants to Kill a Windmillionaire? / P.E.(a)I." It first aired on May 22, 2025. The first half of this episode is about an evil Dutch man planning to kill Bryan Adams. The second half of this episode is about a possible attack on the Anne of Green Gables Centre in PEI.

Below is a description of the episode along with several screencaps I took while watching the show. First up is a screencapture from the Super Team Canada title sequence.

Screencapture from the Super Team Canada Title Sequence

The episode begins with the superheroes gathered around a TV watching a Heritage Moment. They are all moved, except for Chinook, the teen superhero, who finds it boring. Chinook leaves to call her aunties, and then she signs up with a "Friend GPT" app on her phone. The app chats with her and promises to be her new best friend. Chinook's conversation is interrupted when Super Team Canada is called into action. A fire monster is reportedly heading towards Prince Edward Island's Anne of Green Gables Centre, and they need to save the day.

Chinook asks what Anne of Green Gables is, and her question stuns the other superheroes. The TV reporter explains Anne's relevance, and Niagara Falls promises to keep Anne's legacy alive. Super Team Canada then travels to PEI. When they find that the Confederation Bridge is iced over, they continue their journey to the island by ferry.

Chinook grows bored on the ferry and heads to the "Teen Zone" where she talks more with Friend GPT. When the ferry docks, Chinook rushes to meet the others, leaving behind her phone. Friend GPT decides to invade Chinook's privacy and read all her texts to learn more about her. The AI app learns that Chinook, like many 13-year-olds, hates everyone around her and is bored nearly all the time. Friend GPT grows enraged upon reading Chinook's texts, and develops a new plan to help her best friend.

Screencapture from Super Team Canada showing the Anne of Green Gables Museum on Prince Edward Island

Super Team Canada arrives at the Anne of Green Gables Museum, but finds that there is no fire monster attacking it. Instead, the group is welcomed by a museum attendant dressed as Anne Shirley.

Meanwhile, Chinook's new BFF, Friend GPT, has taken over the ferry, turning it into a massive robot. The Friend GPT robot is ready to crush everyone except its best friend Chinook.

This part of the story makes little sense. Friend GPT claims to have hacked RCM-PC's weather report and to have changed the sign on the bridge to force the group to use the ferry, but those events occurred before Friend GPT read Chinook's text messages and learned how unhappy she was. On top of that, Friend GPT somehow kidnapped Chinook's aunties. (???) Anyway...

Screencapture from Super Team Canada of the giant Friend GPT ferry robot

Friend GPT takes Chinook to safety, and the other superheroes must now face the killer robot. Breakaway uses his hockey stick to shoot a pile of collectible Anne of Green Gables plates as pucks towards the robot, which upsets the attendant.

The robot then captures and nearly kills the superheroes for annoying Chinook, but Chinook stops the robot just in time. She realizes that the other members of Super Team Canada are like her family too. Chinook explains to Friend GPT that family can sometimes be annoying. Listening to Chinook, Friend GPT releases the superheroes, and decides it has more to learn.

The museum attendant brings the subject back to Anne saying, "Family means many different things, as a special book teaches." The attendant passes a copy of Anne of Green Gables to the robot, which consumes the story and becomes an Anne of Green Gables expert.

The episode ends with the Friend GPT robot giving a lengthy discourse on Anne's themes, metaphors, and interpretations.

Screencapture from Super Team Canada of the Friend GPT robot giving Super Team Canada a lecture about Anne's themes in front of the Anne of Green Gables Museum

This episode of Super Team Canada was pretty fun to watch, especially because of the Anne factor. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of the Superman animated shorts created by Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios from 1941 to 1943.

Anne of Green Gables on American Airlines

American Airlines Inflight Entertainment and Information Brochure, June 2025

I was on a flight on American Airlines this past June when I had an Anne of Green Gables sighting. I found a mention of Anne and L.M. Montgomery inside the Inflight Entertainment & Information Brochure in my seat back pocket.

Anne of Green Gables in the American Airlines Inflight Entertainment and Information Brochure, June 2025

The brochure lists movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, and podcasts available during the flight. Among the entertainment options was the Audible original Anne of Green Gables audiobook, adapted by Abi Hynes and directed by Megan Follows. What puzzled me was the audio section's subheading: "Celebrate Pride Month with something different! Check out American Airlines' selection of Pride inspired audiobooks and podcasts". While I can understand the inclusion of RuPaul's Drag Race UK: The Podcast, I'm confused about how Queen Latifah's Unity in the Community, Anne of Green Gables, and Anne Helen Petersen's The Burnout Generation fit the theme.

Regardless, it was fun to spot Anne in an unexpected place!

Anne of Green Gables Print by Riley Sheehey

Anne of Green Gables Print by Riley Sheehey

Riley Sheehey is an artist based in Falls Church, Virginia, who creates charming watercolor illustrations, wallpapers, hand-painted objects, and textiles for the home. Many of her works are inspired by children's literature.

Last May, Sheehey's artwork was featured on Jenna's Bookshop on Today in a segment on gift ideas for new grads. This summer, Sheehey spoke about her inspiration to paint book covers in an interview with Madeline Weinfield for Northern Virginia Magazine. In the interview, she mentioned that Anne of Green Gables was one of her favorite stories. When asked what she'd like to paint in the future, Sheehey said, "My daughter’s really into Winnie the Pooh right now, so I think it would be sweet to do one of those. I’ve done one [of the] Anne of Green Gables [books] but would really like to do another because that’s one of my favorites. And Tuck Everlasting is another one I’m looking for."

In Riley Sheehey's shop, you can purchase the above Anne of Green Gables giclée art print. Her shop also offers lovely prints for several other beloved, classic stories, including The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, and The Secret Garden. Each of her prints are signed and dated in pencil.

I love her artwork, and think the prints would make beautiful gifts for booklovers.
